Playing Career
I began my rugby career at Dumfries Minis before attending Merchiston Castle School. I then joined a Watsonians team featuring three British Lions in Gavin Hastings, Scott Hastings, and Roger Baird. In 1994, aged 19 I toured Argentina with Scotland. Subsequently in 1997, aged 22 I won my first full Scotland cap in Paris.
My professional playing career spanned 11 years involving two spells with Edinburgh and a two year spell at Leeds Tykes. I earned 26 caps as Scotland’s fly-half, including two appearances in the 1999 Rugby World Cup. I scored 123 Scottish points from six tries, 15 conversions, 20 penalties, and 1 drop goal. The 2000 Calcutta Cup was the highlight, scoring all the points in a 19-13 win over England converting my own try and kicking four penalties.
